Begin with identity. Confirm the INCI name, plant part, and origin against the supplier's documentation. Review the technical data sheet and note which values are specified and which are typical.
Assess the material organoleptically on receipt: appearance, color, odor, and clarity at room temperature. Record your observations with the batch identity and date — these notes become your baseline.
Run bench compatibility trials in your intended formulation format. For an oil-phase material, this means solubility and blend behavior with your other oil-phase components, followed by small-scale prototypes of the actual concept.
Evaluation is not a single test. It is a sequence of questions the material must answer.
Evaluate stability in context. The material's behavior in your formulation, in your packaging, under your storage conditions, is the only stability data that ultimately matters for your product.
Finally, before scaling, align documentation: confirm the specification you will buy against, the documents you require with each delivery, and the batch-release information your quality system needs.
