Botanical fixed oils oxidize. The rate depends on the oil's composition and on three environmental variables: light, heat, and oxygen exposure. Storage practice is the art of controlling all three.

Keep containers sealed and minimize headspace where practical. Each opening introduces fresh oxygen; for materials used across multiple production runs, consider decanting into smaller working containers.

Protect from light. Opaque or light-protective containers are preferred for storage, and translucent evaluation bottles should be kept in closed storage rather than on open benches.

Light, heat, and oxygen are the three variables every storage decision must answer for.

Keep storage temperature stable and moderate. Elevated temperatures accelerate oxidation, and repeated temperature cycling can affect the material's condition over time.

Track dates. Record the receipt date, opening date, and any retest or evaluation dates for each container. Storage discipline is documentation discipline.
